About the event
JUBILEE (1978) - PUNK WEEKENDER
- Dir. Derek Jarman
- Year. 1978
- Country: Britain
- Run-time: 110 mins
- Rating: 15
A direct riposte to the popular narratives surrounding the Queen's 'Silver Jubilee' in 1977, Derek Jarman's 'Jubilee' contains the fantastical conceit that Queen Elizabeth the 1st is transported 400 years into the future to see the state of Britain during the reign of her namesake and successor, Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. She encounters a dystopian future Britain where anarchic punk sensibilities rule amidst chaos and destruction, coupled with an unlikely blend of humour, parody and confrontational outrage filtered through youth culture at the time, most particularly that of punk and nihilistic bohemianism.
