About the event

We welcome Phil Dawson for an afternoon of live jazz at The Old Library Bar.

Phil Dawson is a top London guitarist who has worked extensively in many different African, Latin and Brazilian music traditions along with Brit jazz, reggae and funk, and played with a host of legends including South African jazz trumpet

giant Hugh Masekela, Nigerian Afrobeat cocreator Tony Allen, Ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke, the Algerian "king of rai" Khaled, and London based Ghanaian afro-rock dons Osibisa. He’s also been a regular with Lokkhi Terra, Dele Sosimi and Soothsayers. Heavy company for sure.

Having recently released a 6 track album - It’s Time, on Funkiwala (distributed by Kudos), Phil is now touring with a stellar band including Rowland Sutherland (Airto Moreira, David Murray) on flutes; Marius Rodrigues (Da Lata) drums; Maurizio Ravalico (Jamiroquai, Collocutor, Dele Sosimi) percussion and Nim Sadot (Harvey Mason, Tony Lakatos)- bass. They play a set blending Coltrane, Hermeto Pascoal, Tony Williams and the Afro-Brazilian tradition in a unique vibe, with grooving originals, spontaneous improv and boundless energy. Praise for “It’s Time”:

“Freewheeling... dazzling... mind-expanding” - Jazzwise

“This is great” - Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio 6

“A contemporary classic” - Quinton Scott, Strut Records
